Initial DESIGN RESEARCH moodboards

Set design sketches

These sketches mark my initial concept designs for the installation's layout.

I played with creating different pathways for audiences to create their own journey through my documentation of Marina's works. Additionally, I wanted my installation to work within the aesthetics of a gallery or museum in order to highlight my practices focus on documentation. Functioning within this style reworks the theatrical black box space which directly contrasts the form of live performance art.

Based on these criteria, I decided to use the second design (a rear-projection screen box) for my final piece.

Lighting plan

This lighting plan depicts the lighting design for Walking Through Walls. I decided to keep the lighting design very simplistic; only lighting the floor in front of each projection screen and the faces of the audience photo collage. I made this design choice to keep my practice in line with a museum aesthetic and to not interfere with the quality of the projections.

Lighting Notes:

Rhythm 0 - profiles 73 + 84 @ 60% intensity

The Audience - profiles 59 + 43 @ 50% intensity

Generator - profiles 13 + 5 @ 60% intensity

The Artist Is Present - profiles 28 + 44 @ 60% intensity

REHEARSAL PLANS AND EXERCISES

Walking Through Walls relies on the reperformance of Marina Abramovic’s durational performance art pieces. This rehearsal plan will physically and mentally prepare artists, who may not have previously participated in live performance art, for the performance experience. I have based these exercises on The Abramovic Method, Abramovic’s Cleaning The House Workshops and the Tibetan teachings from which they are derived from. “They provide a reset for the body and give a set of tools to manage the challenges of the mind.” (Abramovic, 2021)

I will be working with 4 female performers filling the roles of the artist in Rhythm 0 and The Artist Is Present reperformances as well as 2 audience mediators for Generator reperformance. However the roles will not be set, I want any artist to be able to step into any role as my practice utilises durational performance art which is a taxing experience. I believe exploring the exercises as a group will help keep my artists motivated and centred within Marina’s ideals of inner consciousness and using the body’s energy for the final piece.

This rehearsal plan refers to a rehearsal schedule in a non-covid situation as many of the exercises and performances entail physical touch and being within 2 meters of both artists and audience members.
