INSTALLATION & AUDIO

The audience installation can be experienced by listening to the audio in conjunction with the installation video and photo collage

When performed live, The Audience installation piece would be experienced via the visual photo collage accompanied with the audio guide.

The Audience lives at the heart of Abramović's works, they act as her co-creators and a vessel for the energy exchange which both her pieces and my practice aim to achieve. This section of my installation focuses on the effects Marina's works hold on her audiences and their responses to their interaction with her non-traditional form of intense, audience-driven performance art.

Coextensive from Marina's works my own practice also centres the experience of the audience. Each of my sectioned reperformances explores a radical audience-performer dynamic in the form of an experimental performance process. Therefore, I decided to incorporate my audiences experiential feedback into the core of my practice by utilizing my floorcloth as a blackboard for audience discussion. Each audience member is tasked with coloured chalk and encouraged to document the dialogue they feel is created throughout their unique experience with my practice of reperformance.

Example of Audience responce

This example of audience feedback was in response to the filming of Rhythm 0 reperformance and carried out under covid restrictions including use of PPE, hand sanitisation, social distancing and each audience pairing live in the same covid tested household.

After reflecting on my audience's feedback I drew out a few comments that stood out to me:

Energetic

Collaborative

Assault

Intimate

Revealing

Unsure

Guilty

Power

The aim of my practice is to engage audiences both physically and mentally within Marina's body of work. Additionally, I intend for my reperformances to cultivate a sense of self-consciousness and reflection within my audiences as a consideration of their participation within these works. I believe the examples of feedback I have highlighted demonstrate that my audiences are aware of the collaborative energy exchange they have entered as participants whilst being able to reflect on the consequences (both internally and on the performer) of their actions. Ultimately my audience works within the agenda of "activation, authorship and community that is attached to participatory practice." (Machon, 2013:71)
